A Convenient Fiction
I was kind of hoping that Laura, given her predicament and gumption, would learn of Alex’s past and use information about his whereabouts to leverage Tom’s aid against Weatherwax, thus regaining control of her family’s facilities and can go forth with her plans to restore the business but at the cost of Alex’s trust, but it’s okay because although it was a betrayal of his confidences and should’ve been his choice, it results in him facing his past and all is forgiven or something. Instead she gets damseled and, in being saved by Alex, is compromised and quickly marries him as a result and in doing so ultimately solves her problems that way.
Overall this book felt like a combination of the first two books and the stories are starting to feel a little formulaic in some ways. All the main characters in this series so far start off with the potential to be very different, but they all end up feeling too similar. How they experience, observe, and respond to events and their environment is for the most part exactly the same. Having said that, the writing does continue to be very well-researched and overall still made for a good read.
