Baghdad, 1991. The Gulf War is raging. Two girls, hiding in an air raid shelter, tell stories to keep the fear and the darkness at bay, and a deep friendship is born. But as the bombs continue to fall and friends begin to flee the country, the girls must face the fact that their lives will never be the same again.
This poignant debut novel reveals just what it's like to grow up in a city that is slowly disappearing in front of your eyes, and how in the toughest times, children can build up the greatest resilience.
Customer Reviews
Sensational.
I am a baghdadi female, born in the city of my forefathers until 10 years old when we were accepted as refugees in America. Baghdad to me was a fever dream— a city of my imagination where I could find inspiration in the walls and crevices of my ancient Baghdad. I refused to see her as anything other than my warm, welcoming, educated society that taught the world civility and etiquette. This was until I visited Iraq for the first time in 10 years, last November. Since then, I stopped trying to cover the bloodshed with imagery of the beautiful things. I saw war for what it was. Shahad’s book does an amazing job upholding both images of Baghdad. 100% recommend.Thank you so much.
