Review
I appreciated the continuation of characters’ stories from the base game, such as Hytham and Valka. However, one thing I couldn’t ignore was the brazen inaccuracies when it came to the Romans. Valhalla is set in 878 England during the Viking invasion, centuries after the Romans have left the island, and the Roman Empire has long since fallen. Even in the context of the game, you visit Roman ruins and it is frequently mentioned how they are not here any more. Despite this, the book frequently mentions Romans patrolling Hadrian’s Wall despite it being abandoned in-game, and the characters even have a run-in with a Roman garrison. I don’t know how much of this can be chalked up to mistranslation, but these unfortunate discrepancies cause many chapters to read like a poorly-researched fanfiction rather than an officially licensed Assassin’s Creed book, and desperately need revising.
