If predictions hold true, by the year 2020 atleast half of Americans will meet the criteria for obesity. A minimum of one-fifth of health care expenditures will be spent on obesity-related complications. Can business leaders have any impact on curbing this epidemic? If so, how? Fuqua's Health Sector Management held a one-day conference on March 22, 2006 to examine the role of business in confronting the diabetes/obesity epidemic. Leaders from the health care industry and the food industry discussed their strategies. Employer-led initiatives to improve employee health were examined and in addition, panelists considered opportunities for effective collaboration between the private and public sectors.
