Description

The Metropolitan Museum's collection of Greek and Roman art—more than 17,000 works ranging in date from the Neolithic period to the time of the Roman emperor Constantine's conversion to Christianity in A.D. 312—includes the art of many cultures and is among the most comprehensive in North America. The areas represented are Greece and Italy, not as delimited by modern political frontiers, but including much of Asia Minor on the periphery of Greece, Cyprus, the Mediterranean basin, the shores of the Black Sea, and the geographical limits of the political expansion of Rome. Above: Detail, Grave stele of a little girl, ca. 450–440 B.C.; Greek; Fletcher Fund, 1927 (27.45)
