Description

Have you wondered how the doctrine of the Trinity got formulated, why the Eastern and Western churches split, or how the Canon of Scripture came to be. In History of Christianity I, Dr. Fortson explores these questions and more as he takes you through the beginnings of the early church all the way through the genesis of the Reformation. Additional topics include the persecution of the Church politically and doctrinally from within, the development of Doctrine through Church Councils, the rise of Islam, and the beginnings and influence of the Monastic movement.

Good Survey Course

I did not register for the course or read the assigned material. **** This is a survey course of church history from just after the apostles to the eve of the Reformation. The history presented is surprisingly comparable to a group of courses by The Teaching Company, which advertises itself as from the best college classes in the country. To suggest that this course is on a Sunday school level is probably exaggeration. **** Unlike The Teaching Company courses, this course addresses theological issues. I particularly appreciated the interesting and balanced discussion of worship, baptism, and women in the church presented from the perspective of how practices in the early church inform the contemporary church. **** I was intrigued by the discussion about justification and sanctification were nearly synonymous in the medieval church and the Reformation viewed them as related but distinguishable. **** Dr. Fortson presented the best explanation of the Donatist scism I have ever heard. **** The recording quality was reasonably good. **** This course is oriented more toward seminarians who are interested in going into the pastorate rather than those who will become academic historians. **** Overall, this is a very good survey course.

Not helpful or informative

I would not waste time downloading these classes. The instructor is extremely biased and doesn't approach any of the history of Christianity from a scholarly approach. You could hear the same stuff in any church.
