Description

There are those who advocate the benefit of market economies and then there are radicals for capitalism. From privatizing the police to abolishing the Federal Reserve, radical capitalist thinkers, and their followers, argue that markets are more efficient and morally superior than government. This class examines the philosophical ideas and social movement spawned by these thinkers. This class especially focuses on debates within radical capitalist theory and the divisions this has created. The works of Hayek, Mises, Nozick, Rand, and Rothbard will figure centrally in this course. Issues critically examined within this course include the legitimacy of government, the nature of the market, the morality of selfishness, conflicts between utility and rights, and the private provision of what are typically considered government services. © University of Illinois Springfield

Unprepared and Wandering

I was excited to see the opportunity to listen in on the "Atlas Shrugged" portion of these lectures - not because of the lecturer, but because of the topic. Unfortunately, while it seems clear that the lecturer has at least read the book, it is equally clear that little effort was spent preparing his lectures. This is a complex topic, and the unfocused approach of offering to talk about whatever the class wants to learn really does a disservice to the students and the topic. From the questions posed by members of the class, one can easily tell that the students not only don't know what they want to learn, they have little idea what the book or its concepts are all about. It is the responsibility of the lecturer to lead the class through this difficult material by (at least) providing a reasonable framework within which students can come to put together the key concepts that should be being taught. Lamentably, he has failed.

This is completely unlistenable. I can't even comment on the content, because obviously very little thought was put into how this course would work in an audio-only context, which is to say, it doesn't.
