Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is the story...of the moment in America when myth was murdered by mere celebrity and we were left, perhaps forever, with only the latter's meager consolations. – Christopher Orr, New Republic, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Moseying along for 160 minutes, this revisionist western by writer-director Andrew Dominik makes a wan attempt to present the Jesse James legend as the dawn of celebrity culture in America. – J. R. Jones, Chicago Reader, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Awesome splendor and a striking essay on celebrity reward those who brave the 2 1/2-hour run time. – Lisa Kennedy, Denver Post, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: It's a view of the West beyond the myth that's worth enduring, if not relishing. – Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel, May 13, 2009

Good movie! But why can't I buy it?

Really good movie. Superb cinematography and equally good acting. Some people said it was long, but I don't think so. I looked it up later, and saw that it's very historically acurate, too. Definately worth the money!

"new wave" western. be patient

This is not your typical western. Many have compared it to a Shakespeare play. It is true that it moves at its own pace. It takes time unfolding the story but I found it extremely enjoyable. Watch it with an open mind.

Epic title for an epic film!

"The Assassination of Jesse James by The Coward Robert Ford" is probably the best film I have ever seen. Though long, the film never cuts the audience short of seeing emotion, great acting, and scenes that are beyond aesthetically pleasing. The lack of dialogue shows the inner stuggles of each character, and when there is a conversation, it is pertinent. As the film progresses so does the subtle suspense, the ascent to the assassination is just as wonderful as the descent; as well as the actual assassination scene, which was very matter-of-fact and not embellished. This film is definitely for people who enjoy all aspects of film; not just action and explosives. I truly hope that more people discover the DVD and cherish the tale of this Western mythological hero and his tale.
