Plot Summary
In Babel, a tragic incident involving an American couple in Morocco sparks a chain of events for four families in different countries throughout the world. In the struggle to overcome isolation, fear, and displacement, each character discovers that it is family that ultimately provides solace. In the remote sands of the Moroccan desert, a rifle shot rings out - detonating a chain of events that will link an American tourist couple's frantic struggle to survive, two Moroccan boys involved in an accidental crime, a nanny illegally crossing into Mexico with two American children and a Japanese teen rebel whose father is sought by the police in Tokyo. Separated by clashing cultures and sprawling distances, each of these four disparate groups of people are nevertheless hurtling towards a shared destiny of isolation and grief. In the course of just a few days, they will each face the dizzying sensation of becoming profoundly lost - lost in the desert, lost to the world, lost to themselves - as they are pushed to the farthest edges of confusion and fear as well as to the very depths of connection and love.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: [Babel] is, in short, one of the year's best movies.
Fresh: One of the most challenging and saddest movies of the year -- and also one of the most memorable.
Rotten: The filmmakers don't seem to understand or care much about many of these people, but they use them to unload ideas about violence, communication, and tribal misunderstandings -- trading on suffering as they aim for cosmic wisdom.
Fresh: True to its title, Babel hinges on missed and faulty communications of both the personal and the cultural variety. It's a sweeping movie about characters who often suffer from tunnel vision.

Deserved the 'Best Picture' Golden Globe, Should have won the Oscar
You can't really explain it, just watch it. I also recommend "Amores Perros" from the same director. "Amores Perros" is currently in the Top 200 IMDB movies. This is definitely one of those movies that require an OPEN MIND. Most reviewers here have shown that they don't.
It was like a beautiful car with no engine.
The story(s) had plenty potential, and the cinematography was gorgious... but was just poorly put together in a weak string of events that are suppost to be connected to a single gunshot. If you want to be upset and stressed out... watch this movie.
Exactley what movie are you people reviewing?
Because it sure ain't Babel. Babel was, in my opinion, the best movie of '07. I'm not really sure how The Departed was chosen over it to win movie of the year. The most interesting part of the movie is how all the characters (the nanny and the kids, the japanese girl and Dad, the Morrocan brothers, and the American couple in Morroco) are tied together by one single shot of a shotgun by a 10 year old. The story of the two Morrocan brothers also stands out. Brad Pitt did an incredible job, as did his wife in the movie who's name escaped me. Don't listen to the reviewers before me, because they wouldn't know what a good movie was if it kicked them in the head. Just buy this movie. You'll thank yourself.
