Plot Summary
The story of the politically incorrect life of Barney Panofsky, who meets the love of his life at his wedding - and she is not the bride. A candid confessional, told from Barney's point of view, the film spans three decades and two continents, taking us through the different ―acts of his unusual history. There is his first wife, Clara, a flame-haired, flagrantly unfaithful free spirit with whom Barney briefly lives la vie de Boheme in Rome. The "Second Mrs. Panofsky" is a wealthy Jewish Princess who shops and talks incessantly, barely noticing that Barney is not listening. And it is at their lavish wedding that Barney meets, and starts pursuing, Miriam, his third wife, the mother of his two children, and his true love. With his father, Izzy as his sidekick, Barney takes us through the many highs, and a few too many lows, of his long and colorful life. Not only does Barney turn out to be a true romantic, he is also capable of all kinds of sneaky acts of gallantry, generosity, and goodness when we – and he least expect it. His is a gloriously full life, played out on a grand scale. And, at its center stands an unlikely hero – the unforgettable Barney Panofsky.

Fresh: Highly entertaining and arguably the most satisfying Richler screen adaptation to date.
Fresh: 'Barney's Version'' is a smart, well-acted two hours at the art house, full of witty observations and fellow feeling. But, really, it has no business being a movie.
Fresh: The movie, much like your own life, is best enjoyed when you don't know exactly what happens next.
Rotten: This has the overstuffed feel of a sprawling, life-spanning story that's been wrestled down to feature length.

Excellent
Sure, it gets off to a slow start, but as you grow to understand the character, the movie gets better and better. I was surprised to find myself caring so deeply about an obnoxious, rude character. But I was audibly sobbing at the end. Wish I had bought it as I am watching it again to pick up on all the clues regarding the murder. Second time is just as intriguing with plenty of answers to discover what really happened to Boogie. Buy it, don't rent it.

This movie is great! It has dry humor, and makes you laugh and cry. It shows real life drama, and is a great wacky love story. A murder twist is something that is hard to expect! Don't bother renting. Buy, buy, buy! Look for more things by this great director Richard J. Lewis in the future! Amazing movie overall.
Mr G. Did a fabulous job!
His character carried the whole movie. I believed everything he went through. Great movie.
