Plot Summary

Academy-Award®-nominees Ryan Gosling (HALF NELSON, THE NOTEBOOK) and Michelle Williams (BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, SHUTTER ISLAND) star in Blue Valentine, an intimate, shattering portrait of a disintegrating marriage. Once passionately in love, Dean (Gosling) and Cindy (Williams) try to rekindle their lost feelings by spending a night in a hotel, remembering what brought them together six years earlier. Moving between the present and the past courtship of these two, this award-winning movie captures both the promise of new romance and the brutal heartbreak that comes with fading love.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The best of it plays like an acting exercise that serves the intimate, often bruising relationship at the core. Gosling seems to be pulling from an impressive bag of performance tricks, Williams from a deeper well, drawn from life. – Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune, Jan 7, 2011

Fresh: What do we expect of a spouse? "Blue Valentine" makes us ask that question. – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle, Jan 7, 2011

Fresh: Blue Valentine has a rare emotional intensity. There is no way to prepare for its final frames, inevitable as they are. – Rafer Guzman, Newsday, Aug 23, 2011

Fresh: Almost unbearably harrowing but also deeply cathartic, as viewers create their own meanings within Dean and Cindy's singular downward spiral. – Ann Hornaday, Washington Post, Jan 7, 2011

Very emotional, but good

This movie broke my heart. Watching the painful deterioration of a marriage is non too pleasant, but this movie is done in such a brilliant, non-pretentious way. I had to remind myself that it was just a movie and that I was not watching my parents' split..

Amazing Performances

Must see! Michelle and Ryan will break your heart but that is why you will love this movie.

This is as real has it gets folks

Blue Valentine at first had a NC-17 rating due to its two sex scenes, which are not super erotic anyway but I digress. Then after taking a second look at it the ratings board dropped it to R because this is the most real to life love story that is going to come out in a good amount of time. As all the other reviews say it is a heart breaker but it is so so so amazing.
