Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: An intense, volatile film full of sorrow and wild, mordant humor.
Rotten: This film dances on the edge of flat-lining just like the DOAs that are Frank's stock-in-trade.
Fresh: Anyone with a taste for high-risk filmmaking won't want to miss it.
Fresh: A fiery masterpiece!

A must see for ALL EMS personnel!!
My husband and I went to see this in the theater and we were laughing so hard we almost had to leave! This movie represents everything we ever thought about or wished we could do. It's deep and dark and funny, just like almost every day out there on the streets.
Great representation of a medic's city life
This movie definitely takes a different approach than most Scorsese movies. It is dark and direct, and captures a very real essence of the city as well as emergency medical care under insomnia. Perhaps insomnia AND the desire to make a difference is the most notable element in the film. Nicholas Cage and Patricia Arquette play characters that are very easy to identify with. Even the director himself makes an appearance, as Cage's boss!
Really pegs a time and a place
This film really captures the FEEL of working EMS in Midtown NY in the early nineties.
Even though it has a few fanciful moments, the feel is just right.
Naturally, the book is great, too.
And for those of you who missed this time and place, more of this film is true to life than you might think.
