Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: The only problem is that we've been there -- been nearly everywhere Captain America goes -- in countless previous movies.
Fresh: It doesn't try too hard for irony or style; the comic-book sensibility remains pure, square, and happily stupid.
Fresh: The movie looks wonderful.
Rotten: Director Joe Johnston has fun with the myth of Captain America.

The Star Spangled Man!
"Captain America", the final Marvel movie before the "Avengers" next year, is a wonderful conclusion to the superhero origins series. With a good story, great performances, fun visuals, and a HUGE sense of patriotism, this is a superhero movie that will have you saluting by the end.
The story begins during World War II, with Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), who's so small, frail, and disease ridden, he gets beaten up and put down every day. He attempts repeatedly to join the military, despite being turned away every time. When a scientist (Stanley Tucci) notices Roger's integrity, he decides that he's the perfect canidate for a secret project that will create the perfect American super soldier. Sure enough, the expirement is a success, and the small boy from Brooklyn becomes the new symbol for American power. He battles a division called Hydra, led by the Red Skull (Hugo Weaving), who seeks out not only world power, but god power.
What really carries the movie is Chris Evans, who does an almost too good a job as Steve Rogers. The visual that makes him smaller and skinnier than how he looks in real life is incredible, and he does a great Captain America when he gets to be in the action. Hugo Weaving does a really cool job as the Red Skull, though I was dissapointed that he didn't get as much screen-time as I had hoped. The supporting cast does a good job as well, especially Hayley Atwell, who gives a great breakout star performance and will hopefuly be in more films soon.
After "Thor" and "X-Men: First Class", "Captain America" is a great ending to this years Marvel season. Children and adults alike will have a blast watching "The Star-Spangled Man With a Plan". Bring on "The Avengers"! Two Thumbs Up!
PATRIOTISM JUST GOT A LITTLE MORE EPIC!
"Captain America: The First Avenger" truly goes where no superhero origin movie has dared to venture. It carries the broad appeal of a mainstream action flick, as well as the refreshing nostalgic quality of a time period epic, which I find both fascinating and ingenuitive. I really appreciate the fact that it doesn't try to imitate any other movie in its genre, but that it attempts to be something epic all its own, which it ultimately accomplishes doing. And those are only some of the reasons why this movie is truly a shining star in a summer chock full of disappointing sequels and mindless blockbusters. From the minute I took my seat to watch "Captain America", I definitely knew I was in for one heck of a ride, but I had no idea it would be so sophisticated and fun at the same time. The storyline was well drawn out and smartly written, the visuals were mind-blowingly creative, and the battle sequences were almost as intense as those you'd find in any World War II film. But I really have to give it up for the actors, who gave some of the most credible performances I've seen all year. Chris Evans couldn't have been more perfectly cast as Steve Rogers. He's eagerly charming and passionately patriotic enough for you to care for him as a scrawny young man, but once he transforms into the courageous titular superhero, that's when he really kicks it into high gear and shows his true skills as a fearless warrior not to be reckoned with. I should also commend Hugo Weaving as the villainous Red Skull, who really gives the performance his all. But the one actor who truly deserves to be recognized is Hayley Atwell, who plays Peggy Carter (Captain America's main love interest). She's extremely convincing as a hard-working officer who chooses to closely guard her emotions till near the very end of the film. She, at least in my opinion, should be given a nomination of some sort for her compelling portrayal of a great supporting character. All in all, "Captain America" is the perfect popcorn flick that has something for just about every moviegoer: action, adventure, romance, and even a little comedy. There's even a surprise cameo by Tony Stark's father, so that's an added bonus! Anyway, if you're planning on seeing "The Avengers" next year, which I'm sure many of you are, I highly suggest you buy or rent this movie promptly if you haven't seen it already. I can already imagine how awesomely epic it's gonna be seeing the star-spangled superhero on screen next to Iron Man, Thor, and the Incredible Hulk. I can hardly wait!
CA: TA
Amazing movie! One of the only good ones that has come out this year. (Surprisingly Kung Fu Panda 2, and Courageous are the only worth while movies next to this one. All the others are utter crap. What has Hollywood come to? Oh wait, they've always been trashy and made movies with no point. Movies and music can change your life for the better, but Hollywood is using it for the worst... Which can help explain why America is how it is today.) The ending was a typical overused idea, but the hero was admirable. As it should be. Only reason I'm counting a star down is because in the synopsis it says, "to fight for America's ideals." Well, what ideal did he fight for? I do not recall any. When he was a scrawny little wimp, he captured my heart by proving how brave and willing he was to give up his life through the incident with the grenade. But that brings me to the question, why? No one gives up their life that without any reason. So he wants to serve is country... But why?

I hope that one day Hollywood would get it; make more (greatly improved) Captain America and less (*cough* no *cough*) Transformers. Story means a whole lot more than content that appeals to adults.
~Thus says a young teen who believes in story, and not utter crap
