Plot Summary

On the blistering afternoon of August 22, 1972, two optimistic losers attempt to rob a Brooklyn bank -- the frantic master-mind Sonny (Academy Award-winner Al Pacino, "Scent of a Woman," "Carlito's Way"), and his slow-witted buddy Sal (John Cazale, "The Godfather," "The Deer Hunter"). But then the cops arrive. The crowds arrive. The TV cameras arrive. Even the pizza man arrives. As their heist turns into a circus, Sonny and Sal's notoriety grows, and their chances for survival shrink. Pacino teams with his "Serpico" director Sidney Lumet ("The Verdict," "Prince of the City") for a jolting comedy-drama that earned six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, and a win for Frank Pierson's streetwise screenplay based on a real-life incident. Recently selected by the prestigious American Film Institute as one of the 400 greatest American films of all time. "Funny...vivid...Lumet's most accurate, most flamboyant New York movie," raves The New York Times of this box-office hit.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: It's beautifully acted by performers who appear to have grown up on the city's sidewalks in the heat and hopelessness of an endless midsummer. – Vincent Canby, New York Times, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: [Pacino] gives an electric performance, charged with a lunatic energy that expertly captures the weird blend of confidence and self-deprecation (if not hatred) that marks the paranoid syndrome. – TIME Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Dog Day Afternoon is, in the whole as well as the parts, filmmaking at its best. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: Lumet is exploring the cliches, not just using them. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Jul 7, 2010

Customer Reviews

"Attica! Attica!"

Sidney Lumet is just a genius, and "Dog Day Afternoon" is a splendid work from this masterful director. A brilliant screenplay combined with amazing acting make this film a masterwork. This is definitely one you will want to go back to over and over again.

Dog Day Afternoon

Dog Day Afternoon could easily be considered as one of the best movies of all time, some consider it too be Al Pacino's best movie. Sidney Lumet has already been known for classics like Serpico & 12 Angry Men of which I've both seen and loved. This however is by far Sidney Lumet's best film in my opinion (or at least that I've seen so far). John Cazale also stars in this (who had been staring in Frances Ford Coppola's The Godfather & The Godfather part 2 of which are in the top 20 best movies of all time as well as Michael Cimino's The Deer Hunter). Great Movie.

Pacino, the greatest actor in American cinema

Pacino is excellent in this movie. A tour-de-force. The true story behind this film is fascinating. What else can be said... Ah, Pacino!
