Plot Summary
Director Bill Condon brings Tom Eyen's Tony award-winning Broadway musical to the big screen in a tale of dreams, stardom, and the high cost of success in the cutthroat recording industry. The time is the 1960s, and singers Effie (Jennifer Hudson), Lorrell (Anika Noni Rose), and Deena (Beyoncé Knowles) are about to find out just what it's like to have their wildest dreams come true. Discovered at a local talent show by ambitious manager Curtis Taylor Jr. (Jamie Foxx), the trio known as "the Dreamettes" is soon offered the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of opening for popular singer James "Thunder" Early (Eddie Murphy). Subsequently molded into an unstoppable hit machine by Taylor and propelled into the spotlight as "the Dreams," the girls quickly find their bid for the big time taking priority over personal friendship as Taylor edges out the ultra-talented Effie so that the more beautiful Deena can become the face of the group. Now, as the crossover act continues to dominate the airwaves, the small-town girls with big-city dreams slowly begin to realize that the true cost of fame may be higher than any of them ever anticipated.

Fresh: Dreamgirls is the entire musical package, a triumph of old school on-screen glamour, and we wouldn't want it any other way.
Rotten: It's a product that promises magic, and yet gives us nothing to live on.
Fresh: With a star turn like [Jennifer Hudson's] at its center, a movie doesn't need too much more, but Dreamgirls has plenty to go around.
Fresh: Flaws and all, Dreamgirls is certainly a lot more watchable than other recent adaptations of Broadway musicals like Rent, The Producers and The Phantom of the Opera.

MY FAVORITE MOVIE!
I didn't like musicals at all, until I saw this film. In fact, I couldnt even sit through one. And this one is 2 hours! There's something about this films that keeps my attention. It has everything a musical should have; great production, an AWESOME and very talented cast, great story line, and wonderful, catchy musical numbers. You're hooked from the very begginnning. I must admit, being a Beyonce fan, she was the initial reason that I went to see this film. But hear me when I say, SEE IS OUTSHINED GREATLY!! I was actually very saddened by the performance that she gave. I expected a lot more! It wasn't terrible but it could have been better. Ofcourse Jennifer Hudson stole the show from everyone. Her performance was the best that I've seen in any movie so far. I love the fact that she was able to portray a character and make it so believable with this being her first feature film. Besides she won an Oscar...That says it all!! Anika Noni Rose was overlooked! The girl can sing and is very talented! She did not get the resepect she was due! Eddie did a great job as well..what comedian do you know that can make people laugh while portraying a BELIEVABLE James Brown inspired character. Jamie Foxx was okay, I wasn't blown away. Overall the film is absolutely amazing, great transition from the stage to the screen. It is worth every penny spent!
