Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: From its extravagant costumes to its pompous score, The Golden Age is packed with distractions. But the biggest of all is the story itself, which works so mightily to tarnish the queen at its core. – Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News, Oct 20, 2007

Rotten: Every time the camera finally settles on Blanchett's regal cheekbones, it's a relief. – Bruce Newman, San Jose Mercury News, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Even the chance to see Cate Blanchett strut and fret upon the stage, shooting haughty glances left and right, isn't enough reason to tour this rambling Tudor mansion, full of overstuffed bedrooms and empty suits of armor. – Stephen Whitty, Newark Star-Ledger, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: This is romantic fantasy, not history, and much of the time you fully expect Kapur, here making his third post-Bollywood feature, to turn his cast loose in song and dance. – Jonathan F. Richards, Film.com, Jun 24, 2010

Very disappointing - love story ok, history lesson awful

If it was a stand alone movie then the merits would be the romance, with polished performances, although very caricatured. Unfortunately this film suffers from a problem -Elizabeth (as in the previous movie)-. We were led to expect more history, and put a human face to a major leader in the British history. Spain is dealt with in such simplistic terms it is unbelievable "she is a bastard, we kill her". Similarly the film's historical core of the Spanish armada only occupies 10% of the movie, the rest is marshmallow romance, always leaving me hungry.

Cate Blanchett shines again

A flawless performence by Cate Blanchett makes this film more beautiful than it is. Breath taking costume design and cinematography. A MUST SEE
