Open iTunes to preview, buy, and download this movie.

Plot Summary

Best-selling comic book artist Joann Sfar delivers an inventive biography of famed French singer Serge Gainsbourg (Eric Elmosnino). Born Lucien Ginsburg to Russian-Jewish parents, Sfar follows Gainsbourg from his childhood in Nazi-occupied Paris to his transition from painter to jazz musician to pop superstar and his many relationships with beautiful women, including Juliette Greco (Anna Mouglalis), Brigitte Bardot (Laetitia Casta) and Jane Birkin (Lucy Gordon). Employing a witty, surrealistic style GAINSBOURG: A HEROIC LIFE also boasts a soundtrack that plays like a time capsule of ‘60’s Paris.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Lacks either the dramatic intensity or the arresting insight that might have lifted it out of the pedestrian realm of the admiring biopic. – A.O. Scott, New York Times, Aug 30, 2011

Fresh: There's one good reason to see this biopic of the French pop-cabaret songster Serge Gainsbourg, and that's its lead actor, Erik Elmosnino. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, Aug 31, 2011

Fresh: Unconventional, imaginative, nothing if not audacious, "Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life" is a portrait of creativity from the inside, a serious yet playful attempt to find an artistic way to tell an emotional truth. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Sep 1, 2011

Fresh: A lively bout between bio-pic and fairy tale. – Anthony Lane, New Yorker, Sep 6, 2011
