Plot Summary

Sicilian peasant Salvatore yearns for a better life, one he believes exists only in the fabled land known as America where carrots grow taller than men, rivers flow with milk and golden coins rain from the trees. He sells everything he owns to make the transAtlantic passage with his two sons and elderly mother. On the perilous steamship crossing, Salvatore meets a mysterious, worldly Englishwoman, Lucy (Charlotte Gainsbourg), and an unexpected romance unfolds. But neither Salvatore nor Lucy is prepared for the arrival at Ellis Island, where families are inspected, interrogated and split apart. They will have to bravely face their personal and collective dilemmas in order to become part of the American dream.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: A STRIKINGLY shot tale of Sicilian villagers seeking a better life in America, Golden Door is so minimalist, it's practically a silent film. – Christy Lemire, Associated Press, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: The rhythms of the movie are slow and daydreamy, but [director] Crialese delights in breaking up the realism with his protagonist's mystical -- almost madcap -- visions of the New World's abbondanza. – David Edelstein, New York Magazine, Jul 6, 2007

Fresh: A movie about immigration that even Lou Dobbs can get behind. It's so hypnotically breathtaking, you don't realize you're not breathing. By the final shot, you don't realize you're crying either, but there go the tears. – Wesley Morris, Boston Globe, Jun 16, 2007

Rotten: Its minutiae don't bring a lump in the throat -- just a drumming of the fingers. – Bruce Westbrook, Houston Chronicle, Jun 24, 2010
