Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The film has a genial it's-only-a-movie attitude that sets it apart, quite emphatically, from other blockbuster action movies. – Caryn James, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: It's the first futuristic disaster movie that's as cute as a button. Which, when all the special effects blow over, is what we Americans like in a monster hit. – Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: As unavoidably entertaining as it is hopelessly cornball. – Todd McCarthy, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: There's precious little reward in plumbing the world-historical implications of the screenplay. – Scott Rosenberg, Salon.com, Oct 18, 2008

Why can't I buy this????? ONLY 4 RENT!!!!

Dear Apple Investors shareholders please take note at how dumb of Apple to only offer rented movies: Many Itune Movie fans do not WANT TO RENT! Most of these movies OLDER MOVIES can be found on satellite TV to which you can now record them to your hard disk and then upload them your IPOD Now if the movies were for sale, I and many others would BUY them But most movie fans do not want to RENT Sincerly Wall St. PS. This is a VERY GOOD MOVIE, GOOD EFFECTS, LOTS OF SUSPENSE NOT SO SCI-FI FEELS VERY REAL

Great!!

An absolute classic action movie. Great acting from Will Smith and a great storyline. Special effects are good, when you consider how "old" this movie is. Thumbs up for this.

"...will quench your thirst for adventure and great filmmaking."

Wow, if you don't think this is a great movie, you'll never be satisfied! Independence Day (made in 1996) has visual effects that rival today's! Independence Day (rated PG-13) has some of the most scary/disturbing scenes I've seen in a film! Independence Day (a SCI-FI film) has the best cast in movie history, and some of the funniest lines! Independence Day (directed by Roland Emmerich) is one of the greatest movies of all time! What sets Independence Day apart from other films is the fact that it can't be placed under one genre. It's a comedy in some respects. It can be considered a horror during some scenes. There are very dramatic moments; there are very romantic moments. The action is fantastic, and the alien-attacks give it a sci-fi feel. In fact, the only thing it ISN'T, is a cartoon! Don't go by director Roland Emmerich's other works (Godzilla, 10 000 BC, Day After Tomorrow) when deciding how to judge Independence Day. This film is a masterpiece. Whether you're 10 or 110, this film will quench your thirst for adventure and great filmmaking. NOTE: This film is so excellent, I own two DVD versions at my house and the original VHS release...and I still can't get enough of it!
