Plot Summary
Written and directed by Academy Award winner Sofia Coppola (2003, Best Writing, Lost In Translation), Marie Antoinette is an electrifying yet intimate re-telling of the turbulent life of history's favorite villainess. Kirsten Dunst portrays the ill-fated child princess who married France's young and indifferent King Louis XVI (Jason Schwartzman). Feeling isolated in a royal court rife with scandal and intrigue, Marie Antoinette defied both royalty and commoner by living like a rock star, which served only to seal her fate.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: With lyrical intelligence and scrappy wit, Coppola creates a luscious world to get lost in. It's a pleasure.
Rotten: Though Dunst looks the part and stunningly carries off foot-high powdered wigs and lavish costumes, her flat affect and simpering voice don't conjure up the requisite sense of arrogant power, corruption and narcissism.
Rotten: Coppola's queen experiences no inner transformation or redemption because, in this telling, she's in no need of it. She's cool to begin with.
Fresh: Given Coppola's fashion-first approach, it's a miracle the film doesn't feel more like a long perfume ad. But the movie has atmosphere, beauty, spirit, and exquisite production design, photography, and editing.

Notorious Villianess Revealed!
Kirsten Dunst never impresed me as an actress, mainly because of her demeanor and the roles she chose to play (save for Jumanji!). But I have always had a fascination with Marie, learning as much as I can about the pretty girl sent at age fourteen to marry the aloof Dauphin of France. Although this movie is not entirely factual (mainly dates, people's names, and, of course, the highly disputed and debated Axel von Ferson, who provided a delicious romance scene towards the end), the costumes themselves are enough to get you to watch the movie. In my mind, to me, Kirsten Dunst WAS Marie Antoinette, in fact, she is always what I imagined the Queen might look like. And Louis-Auguste, too, or King Louis XVI (Jason Schwartzmen-sp?) was spot-on with his insecurity, his fear, his child-like actions, and his comapssion. Keep in mind, however, there are flaws: for one, it is a pretty slow movie, with not a lot of dialogue for maybe the first forty-five minutes. There is a "shopping-spree-scene" that reveals a pair of Converses on the floor of the Queen's bedroom (of course, this was directed by Sofia Coppola), and the fact that she neglects to mention a whole other child, Marie and Louis's second son, Louis-Charles. My advice is this: rent the movie, watch, and then go and learn about the real Marie Antoinette. Trust me, you won't be disapointed with the historical facts, which are just as juicy as the eye candy in this worthwhile movie.
"So, do you enjoy making keys?" "...Obviously" :D
I love this movie more than words can possibly express.
Beautiful, understated movie.
The acting in Marie Antoinette is subtle, and the scenery is gorgeous, and I'm so glad iTunes finally put this masterpiece up!
