Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: In Outlander, the nuttiest hunk of junk in many months, Viking warriors and a stoic intergalactic traveler join forces to combat an enormous beetle with whiplash stingers.
Rotten: In its second half, Outlander falls apart completely, becoming nothing but a violent, mindless monster movie along the lines of Alien vs. Predator.
Rotten: By taking nonsense seriously Outlander never achieves camp. It's a comic book that's mistaken itself for scripture.
Fresh: An enjoyably goofy hybrid of extraterrestrial sci-fi and Iron Age action.
Customer Reviews
I should have bought this one.
I just knew I should have, but I played it safe and rented it. This was a very good movie. The story was unique and the acting was well done. I highly recommend at least a renting. But like I said I should have bought this one. I Tunes should allow us to buy a movie we rent by paying the difference. That would be fair. Again entertaining movie!!
4 Stars for sure, film snobbery aside.
This film exists in a genre that most people don't understand and are quick to condemn. The story is great fusion history/sci-fi. The beast is incredible and imaginative. The fight against it is highly entertaining. The setting (Iron age Norway) is exotic and perfectly isolated for this kind of sci-fi. In the same way that you must give yourself up to historical fiction works(like the Baroque Cycle), you must also give yourself up to this historical sci-fi. Just take it as it is, believe in it from the beginning, and you will enjoy this film. Judge it based on it's genre:historical sci-fi. Very unusual that genre, and a bold attempt by the filmmakers and I think they pulled-it off at least 4 Stars. Worth the rent. Consider buying it. Would like to see some kind of sequel, focusing more on the advanced society that Kainan comes from. Interesting sci-fi world.
Surprisingly wonderful in almost every way!
I was a bit skeptical as a sci/fi movie I had not heard of. SURPRISE!! It was a fantastic movie! Great story with an even better hero & villan. I cant think of a theme it didn't touch on. If you like movies like Pitch Black and Aliens, this is a must see. If you like movies like the 13 Warrior..this is a must see. I cant think of a sci/fi movie like this for some time. Love, hate, fear, courage, and remorse...how's that for a movie?! The special effects were top notch as well as the acting and direction. Thought the ending was going to disappoint, but it came through just as good as the rest of the movie. I reccomend a purchase of this in leu of renting. Well worth the money for a repeat watching. There is a lot to see and it's very packed. Definately not for younger or squeemish audiences.
