Plot Summary

Alfred Hitchcock's landmark masterpiece of the macabre stars Anthony Perkins as the troubled Norman Bates, whose old dark house and adjoining motel are not the place to spend a quiet evening. No one knows that better than Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), the ill-fated traveler whose journey ends in the notorious "shower scene." As first a private detective, then Marion's sister (Vera Miles) searches for her, the horror and the suspense mount to a terrifying climax where the mysterious killer is finally revealed.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: [Hitchcock's] denouement falls quite flat for us. But the acting is fair. – Bosley Crowther, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: An unusual, good entertainment, indelibly Hitchcock, and on the right kind of boxoffice beam. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: All those who still get a chill every time they step into a hotel shower, say aye. That, you see, is the power of Psycho. – Mary Elizabeth Williams, Salon.com, Mar 7, 2001

Fresh: [Hitchcock] has very shrewdly interwoven crime, sex and suspense, blended the real and the unreal in fascinating proportions and punctuated his film with several quick, grisly and unnerving surprises. – Paine Knickerbocker, San Francisco Chronicle, Jun 18, 2002

Classic.

This is a classic horror movie. I remember watching it with my neighbor and sister when we were little and it scared us to death. Then I studied it in school and really learned to appreciate what an art of work it is. Classic Hollywood; classic Hitchcock.

Thank you iTunes (for once)

This is a great start. Thank God iTunes is getting some classic movies. Here's hoping iTunes brings in more classics. I personally would like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid available for purchase.
