A maverick New York tycoon, Tom Mullen negotiates million dollar business deals for his high-tech corporation. When his son is kidnapped, Tom is counseled by the FBI to make the 2 million ransom payment. At first Tom agrees, but when the drop goes sour, he applies his razor-sharp mind to the situation. To the horror of his wife, Tom challenges the FBI's advice, concluding that the best way to keep his son alive is to withhold the ransom. Tom goes public with his decision, offering a $4 million reward for the capture of the kidnappers, and is shunned by his wife for not consulting with her. As the war of the wills with the kidnappers escalates, Tom struggles when his attempt to save his son's life may have backfired. But just when it looks as if Tom has sacrificed both son and marriage, a surprising turn of events reunites him with his family.
