Plot Summary

From director Hugh Hudson ("Chariots of Fire," "Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan") comes a very special film about love and war. Set in the chaotic, emotionally charged days of the Revolutionary War, Academy Award-winner Al Pacino ("Scent of a Woman," "The Godfather") and the object of his obsessive desire, Nastassja Kinski ("Tess," "Cat People") are caught up in the violent and bloody war. "A thrilling vision of our country's birth pangs," exclaims the Los Angeles Times. "No other film has made American history come so alive," praises L.A. Weekly. "A superb, intensely human, beautifully produced, directed film. One of the very best of the year. Absolutely brilliant," (KCBS-TV). Co-starring Golden Globe-winner Donald Sutherland ("A Time to Kill," "Outbreak"), Oscar-nominee Joan Plowright ("Enchanted April"), Steven Berkoff ("War and Remembrance"), and singer-actress Annie Lennox.

Rotten: It's also a mess, but one that's so giddily misguided that it's sometimes a good deal of fun for all of the wrong reasons. – Vincent Canby, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Rotten: Watching Revolution is a little like visiting a museum -- it looks good without really being alive. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: An almost inconceivable disaster. – Time Out, Apr 17, 2008

Tolerable

If you're interested in history, you'll be interested in seeing the movie, for the sake of history. But if you are a history buff, you'll notice anachronisms, like some of the soliders using cap & ball muskets instead of flintlocks, like they should have been. I know, we shouldn't notice those things, just appreciate the story -- but some of you are going to notice it. If you're looking for an action movie, you're going to find the slow parts hard to bear. They seem to invest an inordinate amount of time trying to develop relationships between characters, but they let these scenes stretch out as if to substitute time for quality, so it just slows the movie down and comes across as a little shallow. This movie was really trying to do what "Last of the Mohicans" succeeded in doing about six years later.
