Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: The world of the fanciful fable looks particularly vibrant this time with its signature blend of realism and fantasy. It is a pleasure to watch these fairy tale folk be themselves -- yet again.
Rotten: Feels sluggish and tired; its relentless, not-so-great gags hit with the soft thud of stone-hard bread crumbs.
Rotten: This is a very skillfully made corporate product, but I wonder who, exactly, will be fully satisfied.
Fresh: The plot material isn't as strong as in the first two movies -- if anything, it feels a bit desperate -- but the anti-Disney joke blunderbuss remains in good working order.

More slapstick than the first two...
The first two "Shrek" movies were really fantastic, original classics. "Shrek The Third" however, doesn't boast the creative input of it's predecesors. It features more cartoonish plot devices; like two characters switching bodies, middle-age crises, and high schools.
When the frog king of Far Far Away croaks, Shrek has the weight of ruling the kingdom on his shoulders. Not wanting to take this responsibility, he seeks out young Arthur, a loser high school kid who's been seen fit to replace him. Meanwhile, back in the kingdom, the pregnant Fiona, along with a group of fairy-tale princesses who can't get along, must defend their home from Prince Charming, who seeks revenge for Shrek stealing the throne in the previous film.
It seems that the new directors thought that because of the huge sucess of the first two films, replacing a smart, dramatic script with slapstick humor wouldn't matter because people loved these characters so much. Shrek used to be a terrifying, yet gentle ogre that we could sympathize with. Now he's just more of a human who's going through a mid-life crisis. Donkey's now a father too, but his annoying behavior which was well-written before, now just feels annoying. Pretty much all the characters with their unique personalities have fallen victim to sitcom-class writers.
Despite all my complaints about the movie, I didn't think it was terrible. I'll admit, there were some human moments that caught my attention, the animation was great as always, and I did laugh here and there. It was just dissapointing to see such a great series of films go down to a Saturday-morning cartoon. The kids are definately going to enjoy it, but older kids and adults won't find the charm that the previous films upheld. As the film stands on it's own, it's a firm thumbs up. But for the true "Shrek" fans, I'd say it's a thumbs down. It comes off overall as a rental.
