Plot Summary

Directed by Kerry Conran, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow revolves around the mysterious disappearance of some of the world's most revered scientists. When an investigation is launched, Polly Perkins (Gwyneth Paltrow), reporter for the prestigious Chronicle, and Sky Captain (Jude Law), resident flying ace, are at the forefront of the case. Though the mission's perks include traveling around the world, the stout-hearted duo are nonetheless risking their lives with each passing moment, as the culprit is none other than the nefarious Dr. Totenkopf, and his goal, from what they can gather, is to destroying the earth in its entirety. Luckily, Sky Captain and Polly are not alone — Franky Cook (Angelina Jolie), the commander of an all-female amphibious squadron, and Dex (Giovanni Ribisi), an unparalleled technical genius, have joined them in hopes of saving the planet before it's too late. Laurence Olivier appears posthumously as Dr. Totenkopf, via old film-clips "recycled" (or CG-altered) to fit the dialogue and scenes at hand.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: A clever parlor trick but a dull movie. – Claudia Puig, USA Today, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow may be one of those films that leaves you humming the scenery, but it's a tune you won't easily forget. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: His nostalgia enabled by technology, Conran takes the ghosts in his machine seriously, and the results appear at once meltingly lovely and intriguingly inhuman. – Ed Park, Village Voice, Sep 22, 2004

Fresh: Such an interestingly silly movie that I found myself idly wondering what particular audience was being targeted with its peculiar conceits and infinitude of special effects. – Andrew Sarris, New York Observer, Jun 24, 2010

Excellent

I thought this was a great movie. Be warned, though: this is not a serious, OR realistic movie. This does not make it a bad movie at all. You just have to go into this movie knowing that it is highly stylized, in the most impressive way. Basically, in a nutshell, if you are a guy, this was the kind of movie you could only have dreamed of as a 10 year old. It's old-school hero-villian adventure with secret bases, unbelievable settings, and crazy gadgets. Yes, at times you can tell that this movie was done on a green screen, but only very infrequently, and only if you are trying to look for it. In summary, this is an incredibly unique movie, and if you are a guy with any sense of fun and child-wonder left in you, this is worth seeing at least once. I recommend it.

Sky Captain is a special movie

I like this movie a lot, especially because it was all shot inside a studio. All the scenarios are computer made, and that's a lot of work. The texture of the image gives it the feeling of a 1940s sci-fi film. The only thing I'd say against this download is that the audio is a little bit off the video, and that's really annoying.

It always amuses me...

to read reviews from those that "just don't get it" and never will. People who are locked and chained into the left side of their brain should avoid any and all media that employs the "C or F" words: creativity and fantasy. These abstract thinking tools that are used in the creation of this movie only register as dull and unnecessary to the bean counters of the world. In truth, this is a fantastic effort by a very skilled and creative movie maker and his WOT company with a handful of Macs and video editing software. It's supposed to look like a 1940's Saturday morning serial. It's supposed to use dialogue that matches accordingly. The writers and cast are doing that on purpose. It's not supposed to be "serious". It's Fun! It's not real. It's Fun! No, they really can't do that. It's Fun and interesting and thought provoking. It's a technologically and cinematically cutting edge, never been done like this before movie. I own this movie and will watch it on a regular basis because I get it and appreciate what the movie maker was trying to do. AND, it's a heck of lot of fun.
