Plot Summary

Winner Toronto Midnight Madness 2010. The America of STAKE LAND is a lost nation. When an epidemic of vampirism strikes, humans find themselves on the run from vicious, feral beasts. Cities are tombs and survivors cling together in rural pockets, fearful of nightfall. When his family is slaughtered, young Martin is taken under the wing of a grizzled, wayward hunter whose new prey are the undead. Simply known as Mister, the vampire stalker takes Martin on a journey through the locked-down towns of America's heartland, searching for a better place while taking down any bloodsuckers that cross their path. Along the way they recruit fellow travelers, including a nun who is caught in a crisis of faith when her followers turn into ravenous beasts. This ragtag family unit cautiously moves north, avoiding major thoroughfares that have been seized by The Brethren, a fundamentalist militia that interprets the plague as the Lord's work.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Ryan Samul's cinematography and Jeff Grace's score pick up the slack, smoothly maintaining an unstable atmosphere of lurking horror. – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times, Apr 21, 2011

Fresh: Shows that a savvy mixture of characterization, atmosphere and gore-eographed suspense can make even the most familiar fright tropes feel vaguely organic again. – Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times, Apr 28, 2011

Fresh: A gritty, low-key hybrid of horror film and road movie that aptly demonstrates the stylistic flexibility of this undying genre. – Justin Lowe, Hollywood Reporter, Apr 18, 2011

Rotten: Some numbers are too large to contemplate. How many drops of water are there in the ocean? How many grains of sand are there in the desert? How many more apocalyptic zombie movies must I sit through? – Kyle Smith, New York Post, Apr 22, 2011

Loved it

Interesting characters, especially Damici. Visually compelling (I watched the Hi-def version) . The gore is bit much at times and is really the only place where the budget is sort of evident. But the gore, even the horror is almost inconsequential. I was interested in the people and after seeing probably all the zombie, vampire movies made up to date, I found myself seeing it for what it was.: a good yarn. Great score; I especially enjoyed the end credit music. Look forward to watching it again with friends. Enjoy!

Pure Awesome!

surprisingly good!

I was impressed by the character development, cinematography and emotional heft of this movie. I liked that they didn't waste time trying to explain how the vamps came to be,but instead focused on the plight of this group to survive amongst them. Of course there were some parts that dragged a little, and the cult leader was a bit over the top, but I was thoroughly entertained overall. Highly recommended to any fan of a good post apocalyptic vampire movie!
