Plot Summary

Academy Award®-winner Russell Crowe leads an all-star cast, including Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams & Helen Mirren in the gripping thriller about deception, manipulation & corruption. When D.C. Reporter Cal McCaffrey (Crowe) is assigned to investigate the murder of an assistant to an up-and-coming politician (Affleck), he uncovers a conspiracy that threatens to bring down the nation's power structures. In a town of spin-doctors and wealthy power brokers, he will discover one truth: when fortunes are at stake, no one's integrity, love or life is safe. From director Kevin Macdonald of The Last King of Scotland, State of Play brings together strong performances, riveting suspense and is "sophisticated, intelligent and powerful" (Shawn Edwards, Fox-TV).

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The three screenwriters may have been trying to work too many plot strands into two hours; in any case, State of Play is both overstuffed and inconclusive. – David Denby, New Yorker, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: As a former reporter and a fervent believer that we need good, independent newspapers to do their jobs keeping government and business in check, I think they got the journalism right. – Ben Mankiewicz, At the Movies, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: It's sentimental in all the right ways. – Peter Rainer, Christian Science Monitor, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: This is exhilarating, compulsive storytelling and looks likely to be one of the year's cinematic highlights. – Wendy Ide, Times [UK], Jun 24, 2010

Underrated, Excellent!

Really loved this movie. Is a MIND thriller, not "action with blood and guts and many, many meaningless car chases, gratuitous sex or unnecessary bad language or destruction of property." If you want to see a movie based on good acting, a mystery, thriller plot that makes you think, multiple twists and a great story, great cast, and great directing, this is the movie for you. IT IS NOT BORING! Just not the usual blood and guts, killing and destruction that makes most action movies succeed monetarily. Well worth the watch.

Highly Under Rated

This movie should have made more money in theaters. It is an old fashoned thriller that is very well acted, well written and well directed. In my opinion its not worth buying, however give it a rent. If you have any tast in movies, you won't waist you're time.

Needs more praise

This is a great movie. It is well written, acted, and filmed. There should have been more praise for this movie, I told many friends and family to go see it, and not a single one was disappointed. Don't miss out now because you missed it in the theatre.
