Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Abrams' imitation is a shade too reverent for my taste. He lacks the subversive edge that allowed Joe Dante to bite his producer's hand and bring Gremlins to life, for example, and Abrams seems unsure just how scary he wants things to get. – Tom Charity, CNN.com, Jun 9, 2011

Fresh: Abrams remembers the simple rule that a majority of his contemporaries have forgotten: action and mayhem have meaning only when an audience cares about the people trapped within the maelstrom. – James Berardinelli, ReelViews, Jun 10, 2011

Fresh: There's much to like in this story of a group of young movie-makers who stumble upon an event right out of, well, the movies. – Lisa Kennedy, Denver Post, Jun 10, 2011

Fresh: Remember the good old days? This is the movie you went to see on a Saturday afternoon in the good old days. – Tom Long, Detroit News, Jun 10, 2011

THE ULTIMATE SPIELBERG SCI-FI HOMAGE!

Look, before I even begin, let me make one thing perfectly clear: "Super 8" isn't a movie that everyone's automatically gonna like. It specifically hearkens back to the early days of epic sci-fi blockbusters like "Close Encounters of a Third Kind" and "E.T.". In other words, if you don't appreciate a good mystery-fueled alien adventure filled with a strong sense of atmosphere and subtlety, you might as well leave this page and check out other action-packed sci-fi films that might be more suited to your taste, such as "Battle: Los Angeles" or "Cloverfield". But anyway, let me get back to the review on hand. I personally happened to find this flick both authentically enriching and hauntingly epic. The performances of young newcomers Joel Courtney and Elle Fanning were irresistibly charming and refreshingly genuine. Plus, it was a pleasant surprise to see a much different side of Kyle Chandler's acting abilities aside from his role in "Friday Night Lights". In addition, the Midwestern late 1970's setting of the movie felt thoroughly nostalgic, the brilliant score by Michael Giacchino was nothing short of perfection, and the story was heavily suspenseful and intense when it needed to be. So, all in all, "Super 8" is, at least in my opinion, one of the most magnificent displays of vividly imaginative storytelling and fantastic visual artistry to grace the big screen so far this year. And although you can argue that this flick is, in a way, a direct dedication to Spielberg's past filmography, there's no denying the fact that it still works as a solid sci-fi adventure all its own.

Best movie of the summer of 2011

The story's pace is perfect. The young actors are excellent--convincingly innocent and scared. My son and I were literally at the edge of our seats as the suspense continued to build. The music, while not memorable like Jaws or E.T. still helped keep us involved in each scene, whether it was scary or simply a moment of peace where two characters are sharing a loving moment. The build up of slowly revealing the "alien/monster/creature/animal" as the movie progressed reminded me of Jaws. It worked again. My son and I love movies and at the end of this one, my son stood up and shouted something to the effect of: "That was one of the greatest movies I have ever seen." I concur...at least for 2011.

AMAZING!

SCi-fi of the year, just an amazing movie!
