Plot Summary
Madonna and Adriano Giannini star in director/screenwriter Guy Ritchie's contemporary adaptation of Lina Wertmuller's 1974 romantic comedy, "Swept Away," a story of love, sex and too much money - all set against the backdrop of a spectacular Mediterranean island paradise. A rich, spoiled socialite (Madonna) and a handsome Italian fisherman (Giannini) find themselves stranded on a deserted island where matters of material wealth and class disparity are meaningless. And in their struggle to survive and coexist in their paradise found, they soon discover that their dramatic differences are suddenly the source of a fierce, passionate and sometimes hilarious animal attraction.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: The Vera Hruba Ralston of her time, Madonna has persisted in making movies despite all evidence that this is one medium in which no one wants to see or hear her.
Rotten: Is it a comedy? A drama? A romance? A cartoon?
Rotten: I wouldn't wish the stupefying dialogue of "Swept Away" on any actress, but to watch Madonna flounder through it is more punishment than I can bear.
Rotten: Every bit the cinematic shipwreck you'd imagine it to be.

Great Movie!
I don't care what the reviews were for this movie I thought it was great and Madonna was fantastic! A great buy for any Madonna fan!!
Panned By Critics, but Not all Bad
This movie definately has some redeeming qualities... as well as it's faults... Madonna has given better performances but there are really some subtle moments when she really shines... My favorite is when she's on the exerbike and says "Shut up you old drunk!" I don't know why... there are also some bits on the island that are quite good... The directing was typical Ritchie with cuts and flashes, and the beginning of the movie leads you to think this will be a Comedy... which I think is why alot of people hate it, because it ends up NOT Being a Comedy and you leave Angry.
Love Madge, Hate Swept Away
I am one of the biggest Madonna fans. I bought this on DVD when it first came out and my parents came to visit that weekend. I put this in and boy was I mortified. This movie is awful. Now it had some good lines on the boat, but once they ended up on the island it was painful. I watched if a few months ago thinking that the first experience may have been tainted by old mom and dad but it was still bad. They should have made this a parody of stuff like survivor and cast away and it would have been a lot better but they played it off straitght which really made it bad. I mean, come on, how can you explain that they have nothing in one scene and the next scene they built a shack to live in. Where did they get the wood. At first I really gave the benefit of the doubt that it could have been a crashed pirate ship but the wood looked to good to be from a crashed boat. Forget this movie and watch anything else by Madonna, even old video clips on itunes is better than this peice of garbage. Anyone want a copy for free. Nah, cant give up my Madonna collectables no matter how bad they are.
