Plot Summary
Mariah Carey, Ethan Peck, and Adam Rothanberg star in this honest and heartwarming journey of self-discovery from producer Lee Daniels (director and producer, Precious). Rotten: Tennessee is an earnest, increasingly preposterous road movie about unhealed family wounds and fraternal bonds.
Rotten: The dramatic payoffs are either nonexistent or overly manipulated, and for a journey that starts with so much deep-set pain and regret to end with a sentimental twist feels, to use a phrase anathema in Carey's world, off-key.
Rotten: Woodley's film mostly floats along on its melancholy drift, so well-attuned to the low-key rhythms of its beaten-down characters that it never quite summons up enough energy for the rest of us, who are along for the ride.
Rotten: As a Texas waitress, Carey is convincing -- more so than the film itself.

I really am impressed...Great Movie!
Wow. You know i had heard about Tennessee, butha never seen it. i finally did and it's a pretty damn good independent film. I mean it. This time Mariah hit it on the nail. She doesn't overact, she just really gets into the role. we see her really diving into it and see a side of her that's never been seen before. i love it! buy it you won't regeret it. i give this movie 5 stars becuase it was Mariah's "try out" sort of mnovie and i think it went very well.
Magical and Poignant
I really took a chance on this film because i've been burned before on independent films and I've certainly been burned before by Mariah Carey's acting (Glitter). I must say right up front...this movie MOVED me. Mariah Carey more than delivered in this role. There is no pretense or "diva" present here. There is only a lost, lonely woman looking to get out of her troubled life and finding that escape on the road with two men on their own devastating journey towards hope. The acting from all the cast is stellar. There are a few moments that are slightly unbelievable, but overall this film delivers an emotional punch that will leave you grabbing for the kleenex. Kudos to the filmmakers for the beautiful cinematography, fabulous lighting, subtle soundtrack and THANK YOU for not making this a Mariah Carey vehicle. The film doesn't need that and Mariah doesn't need that. I can now safely say that Mariah Carey is an actor. And a darn good one.
Loved my girl M in this movie!
Loved the story and loved M's acting in this film. Lee Daniels is brilliant. He has been even before Precious. Unfortunately, it took people seeing that film to realize his directing abilities and M's acting skills. She was phenominal in Wisegirls, Tenn, and Precious. And come on folks... Glitter was good. It wasn't as bad as they made it out to be... If Wisegirls or Tenn (this film) was her acting debut, she would have never gotten all the negative press. Plus it was 9/11 everyone that the album was released... Which caused sales issues for the Glitter record. I highly reccomend this film. Was very well done. -SwiftyMC
