Fresh: Anyone looking for a discouraging word about this stupendously exciting and emotionally engulfing film should read no further. The Abyss confirms James Cameron as a world-class filmmaker.
Fresh: A firstrate underwater suspenser with an otherworldly twist, The Abyss suffers from a payoff unworthy of its buildup.
Fresh: The human stuff is more than worth the descent.

Full Screen is the best way to watch this film!
I am a huge fan of this James Cameron movie, having watched it about 50 times over the years. Even since I learned that Cameron films in Super 35 I've been waiting for this film to arrive in full-screen format. If you are a die-hard fan of this film in wide-screen you'll soon notice that you're seeing more of the scene in full-screen since Cameron extracts his wide-screen format from this full-screen Super 35. I'd love to have Terminate 2 in full-screen as well.
So we are going to play this game....
Like VHS, LaserDisk, and DVDs before it.. we have to milk the customers want (and dollar) of something with multiple versions. Each one a little less inadequate than the one before it. First the ho-hum standard version. Then the special version. After than a super-special version. And so-on till the super-special unauthorized directors uncut freaky fantastic turbo (twice-removed) edition. I want this. Directors-cut version. Wide-screen. Thats the one that gets my dollar. 'nuff siad
A must own...
This is simply one of the better sci-fi movies ever made. You've got undersea mining, nuclear submarine wrecks, underwater UFOs, tsunamis (at least, in one version), navy SEALS... I mean, the only thing holding it back from its rightful status as the greatest movie of all time are a couple of zombies. In all seriousness though, Ed Harris' and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio are at the top of their game here. They have near perfect chemistry from start to finish. Then you've got Micheal Biehn bringing Terminator badassness as the sickened SEAL team leader. The palpable stress between characters is often amplified by the Das Boot-like claustrophobia of the undersea mining rig they're all trapped in to bring the whole story to a masterful last quarter. I cannot recommend this movie enough.
