Plot Summary
Walter, once a successful and happy family man, has hit rock bottom. But, in his darkest hour, he finds a rather unusual savior: a beaver hand-puppet that takes over Walter's life in an attempt to change things for the better. Academy Award® winner Jodie Foster directs and co-stars with Academy Award® winner Mel Gibson in a film critics call "bold," "complex" and "funny."

Rotten: For a film about the real problem of mental illness, it never feels authentic. Depression is not something neatly tied up. If this is meant as an allegory, it's vague and unconvincing.
Fresh: In The Beaver, a stately family drama with a black comedy struggling to break free from within, Mel Gibson deploys a seemingly magical hand puppet -- plus more charm than he's allowed out in public in years.
Fresh: With The Beaver, Gibson shows that for all his personal turmoil, he still may have a career in the twilight years.
Fresh: That this ambitious, if deeply odd, film is so compulsively watchable is a credit to Gibson's compelling performances, both as spiritless Walter and the Cockney-accented voice of the tireless title character.

One of the better movies of the year
As someone who watches a lot of movies, I feel this is one of the better productions so far this year. Mel Gibson may have had some missteps in his personal life, but his acting is still amomg the best. Add in Jodi Foster, an all around good cast, and a compelling story, and you have a fine movie. Grab some popcorn and have a look.
LEAVE IT TO MEL
This is Gibson at his very best - up there with The Road Warrior, The first couple of Lethal Weapons, Braveheart, The Passion, and Apocalypto.

I don't like Mel Gibson but this movie is definitely strong
