Plot Summary

What if someone gave you a box containing a button that, if pushed, would bring you a million dollars…but simultaneously take the life of someone you don’t know? Would you do it? And what would be the consequences? The year is 1976. Norma Lewis is a teacher at a private high school and her husband, Arthur, is an engineer working at NASA. They are, by all accounts, an average couple living a normal life in the suburbs with their young son…until a mysterious man with a horribly disfigured face appears on their doorstep and presents Norma with a life-altering proposition: the box. With only 24 hours to make their choice, Norma and Arthur face an impossible moral dilemma. What they don’t realize is that no matter what they decide, terrifying consequences will have already been set in motion. They soon discover that the ramifications of this decision are beyond their control and extend far beyond their own fortune and fate.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Sincere and sinister and inevitably ambitious. – Manohla Dargis, New York Times, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Kelly has talent, but for his next movie, he might try coming down to earth and forgetting about the people who control the lightning. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Kelly, as he did in Donnie Darko, avoids obvious scare techniques. Instead, he makes the bizarre, the surreal, and the frightening emerge from normal reality. – David Denby, New Yorker, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: After a slightly promising start, this great-looking but ultimately deeply confusing and unscary sci-fi/horror opus turns into a quite boring rehash of M. Night Shyamalan's post-Signs films. – Lou Lumenick, New York Post, Jun 24, 2010

Oh NOOOO! A box!! The horror!

Hmmm...where to begin? The confusing plot? The incredibly depressing ending? This movie was a total waste of my time! I LOVE movies A LOT! But this movie was just a huge ball of ICK. If you're really bored and have absolutely nothing else to do on this earth then go for it and watch this movie, but I promise this movie will make you wish you just stayed bored.

I'm just going to tell it like it is...

If you think a movie will be good because Cameron Diaz is in it...this movie is probably not for you.
If the ending of The Sixth Sense caught you off guard...this movie is probably not for you.
If your IQ falls below the 130-135 range...this movie is probably not for you.

Depends on your state of mind...

I watched this movie with my sister and aunt and we were in a really light mood when we saw it. If you ever see the funny or die (.com) bit named "The Button" then you will know how we were prepared to watch this movie (recommended). We were cracking non-stop jokes before the movie started and then we were completely surprised to find that the entire movie was based and filmed exactly where we are living (kind of eerie). This probably made the movie more entertaining to us than--what I would guess to be--the more average viewer. Needless to say, we loved the movie and recommended it to everyone. It's a done deal that we own a copy of it now. Do you like old episodes of Twilight Zone? Got an attitude about the Sci Fi channel changing the spelling of their name? This is your movie.
