Plot Summary
In the wake of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, seven men and one woman are arrested and charged with conspiring to kill the President, Vice President, and Secretary of State. The lone woman charged, Mary Surratt (ROBIN WRIGHT) owns a boarding house where John Wilkes Booth (TOBY KEBBELL) and others met and planned the simultaneous attacks. Against the ominous back-drop of post-Civil War Washington, newly-minted lawyer, Frederick Aiken (JAMES McAVOY) reluctantly agrees to defend Surratt before a military tribunal. Aiken realizes his client may be innocent and that she is being used as bait and hostage in order to capture the only conspirator to have escaped a massive manhunt, her own son, John (JOHNNY SIMMONS). As the nation turns against her, Surratt is forced to rely on Aiken to uncover the truth and save her life. From director Robert Redford, The Conspirator is a riveting thriller that tells a powerful story about America then and now.

Rotten: James McAvoy, as the Civil War veteran who defends Surratt, has an avid presence, but the movie is stiff-jointed and dull.
Fresh: There's a stiffness that keeps the story from packing a punch. Still, it's handsomely mounted, and at its best moments has the patina of a Masterpiece Theater production.
Rotten: A better history lesson than it is a drama.
Fresh: A bracing courtroom drama whose every scene seems wreathed in mist, dust motes and cigar smoke, the better to suggest a nation befogged by grief.

Great History Film!
The only way you will like this movie is if you are a fan of what happened to Lincoln or a history buff. I am both so I loved this movie. James McAvoy acts great as the lawyer for the woman, couldn't ask for anyone else. Only a few number of people will enjoy this film and I'm one of them.
Very rare
A movie that attempts to be historically accurate yet is entertaining is rare. It's a masterpiece that any historian should be proud of.
I loved this movie!!
When I first saw the trailer for this movie, I was so excited to see it. The story of Mary Surratt is one of the least told chapters in American history, but it's a story that is so amazing, you're on the edge of your seat, wanting this story to have a happy ending.
