Plot Summary
Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson and Mark Wahlberg star in Martin Scorsese's new crime drama "The Departed." "The Departed" is set in South Boston where the state police force is waging an all-out war to take down the city's top organized crime ring. The key is to end the reign of powerful mob boss Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson) from the inside. A young rookie, Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) is assigned to infiltrate Costello's mob. While Billy is working to gain Costello's trust, another young cop, Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) is among a handful of elite officers whose mission is to bring Costello down. But what his superiors don't know is that Colin is working for Costello, keeping the crime-boss one step ahead of the police. Each man becomes deeply consumed by his double life, gathering information about the plans and counter-plans of the operation he has penetrated. But when it becomes clear to both the gangsters and the police that they have a mole in their midst, Billy and Colin find themselves in constant danger of being caught and each must race to uncover the identity of the other man in time to save himself.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Scorsese has put together a fantastic ensemble of actors: Some of the movie's best performances are the ones tucked into the corners, like Alec Baldwin's beefy, arrogant state police honcho.
Fresh: The storytelling here is a model of smooth precision.
Fresh: The Departed is murderous fun, but it's too shallow to be the kind of movie that haunts your sleep.
Fresh: The Departed has enough tension to keep you engrossed, and enough color for ten crime pictures. Scorsese obviously adores his expensive, expansive ensemble.

Best movie of 07
The first time I saw this movie, I watched it 4 times. Never been a huge Mark Walburg fan and really disliked Matt Damon until this flick came out. I now have the deepest respect for all 4 of the central actors and pretty much everyone else who was invloved. Lots of graphic violence, but very importantly, the movie doesn't shy away for the aftermath of the many bloodbaths. Especially concerning DiCaprio. His performaces include many deeply emotional scenes. I'm not from Boston, but the accents seemed a little strong and that is the only critisism I can think up for "The Departed." For me, it didn't detract from the realities of these charactors lives, whatsoever and did help define the setting. Nicholson is the most fantastic villain I have seen in a long time. You can see that what is coming is not going to be pretty, early on, but with such an interesting plot and subject matter, very developed characters that all have their turn to show their unique backgrounds and perspectives, intruiging dialog and fast past action, you won't be able to look away, hungrily awaiting the next moment and every detail. (Ladies, I like to keep this around for when a guy comes to your place to chill and watch a movie. It's perfect "guy" movie, that you'll love too, if you are ok with blood, dismembered body parts, etc. Your guy will return for another night in, I promise. He will know he won't have to worry about any "Practical Magic," stuff with a lady like you. ; )
Oh My!
