Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: It chronicles the saga of a vibrant and forward-thinking woman hampered by the constraints of a rigid society.
Rotten: It's disturbingly shallow, focused so tightly on one woman's feelings of repression and loneliness that it lacks any perspective on their causes.
Fresh: Beguiling.
Fresh: The Duchess is clearly Knightley's movie, ultimately rising or falling on her performance. She's up to the task, capturing both the charm and grace that made Georgiana so captivating.

Brilliant
This film was pure brilliance. Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes did an amazing job in their portrayals of the Duchess and Duke of Devonshire. This film and the individual actors deserve many awards and I hope the film industry recognizes this. The costumes were beautiful, the settings equally as grand. The film was very accurate to the actual story of Georgiana and was actually filmed in several of her real life residences, including Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. This film was just amazing and that's all I can really say about it. It was full of passion and romance along with drama and portrays a really powerful woman struggling to break through the mold of what society wanted women to be like. Definitely a good buy!
Fabulous
This movie is worth watching just for the costumes and interiors. It helps a lot that the drama is so well put together. I read the biography of Georgiana. As usual, her life was much for complex and interesting than they could pack into a movie. But they managed to portray the gist of her life fairly well, and Keira is fantastic. Ralph is so great at playing a creep, too. I wish they'd added a bit more about the importance of Georgiana's political life. Also, the truth about how illegitimate children were integrated into 18th century lives would have been more interesting, but perhaps less commercial. To sum up my review, this movie is very entertaining. And, as I said, the costumes are amazing.
Delightfully Entertaining
For those who enjoy a good historical drama this is an excellent movie. Well written and featuring a superb cast, it makes for one of the best movies of 2008. Full of witty humor of the times, as well as the heartbreaking romances and betrayals that make a drama interesting. I do hope that Kiera Knightly and Ralph Fiennes work together again in the future, as they are truly wonderful to watch.
