Plot Summary

All the human spirit needs to thrive...is a chance. In one of his most legendary films, director David Lynch chronicles the intense emotional journey of a complex, lonely man and the dedicated surgeon who changed his life. John Merrick (John Hurt) was born with a horribly disfiguring congenital disease, and suffered the humiliation of being a sideshow freak. Only when London doctor Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins, Silence of the Lambs, Red Dragon) rescues him does Merrick begin to regain the life of dignity and respect that everyone deserves. Based on a true story, the critically acclaimed, Oscar®-nominated film has earned its place in cinematic history. Anne Bancroft, John Gielgud and Wendy Hiller lend moving performances to an already powerful story. Visually fascinating and historically relevant, Lynch has created a haunting masterpiece of compassion, beauty and ultimately, humanity.

Fresh: Director David Lynch has created an eerily compelling atmosphere in recounting a hideously deformed man's perilous life in Victorian England. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: This tale of a pure soul struggling to be heard over the prejudice of the many is quite heart-rending. – Almar Haflidason, BBC, Nov 2, 2004

Fresh: A marvellous movie, shot in stunning black-and-white by Freddie Francis. – Tom Milne, Time Out, Apr 30, 2008

A masterpiece

One of the best movies I have ever seen .. A must see movie for the people who appreciate art and humanity .. A very touching movie ..

A wonderfull film

This movie was very touching. A very sad tale (shocking to think this is a true story) This story reminded me of the frankenstein story by Mary Shelly I loved this movie very much keep in mind when watching though. We treat people this way without having these kinds of deformitys very sad to think that we treat people this way with our words and our fists.

This movie is in black and white.

Just want to let potential buyers who haven't seen this know that the film is in black and white. The key art image would lead you to believe this film is in color. It is an excellent film regardless.
