Plot Summary
Academy Award-winner for Best Documentary Feature, The Fog of War is the story of America as seen through the eyes of the former Secretary of Defense, under President Kennedy and President Johnson, Robert S. McNamara. McNamara was one of the most controversial and influential political figures of the 20th century. Now - for the first time ever - he sits down one on one with award-winning director Errol Morris (The Thin Blue Line) to offer a candid and intimate journey through some of the most seminal events in contemporary American history. As leader of the world's most powerful military force during this nation's most volatile period in recent years, McNamara offers new and often surprising insights into the 1945 bombing of Tokyo, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the effects of the Vietnam War. Featuring newly released Oval Office recorded conversations with Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, The Fog of War received critical acclaim for its up-close and personal insider perspective. See the film that Roger Ebert (Chicago Sun-Times) hailed as "a masterpiece!"

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Morris, an ideal combination of journalist and romantic artist, matches footage to the words for maximum illumination and emotional impact.
Fresh: For those of my generation, the true resonance in the film may be in the constant juxtaposition between the then and the now of the McNamara life.
Fresh: Fascinating documentary about Robert S. McNamara.
Fresh: McNamara, a robust conversationalist, is so lively that he bursts out of what is essentially a talking-head documentary.

Must see documentary for our time and beyond...
An insightful doc that transcends its flaws. I saw this in a movie theatre when it first came out and I was enthralled from the get-go. I like the "lesson plan" format of the film, which made it clear what was being talked about and when. I heartily recommend this film to anyone with an interest in history and politics...provided they haven't already seen it. And the flaws...mainly, I was disappointed in McNamara as he never addressed some of the more serious issues concerned with his appointment as Secretary of Defense during the Kennedy and then LBJ administrations. However, that does not detract from an expertly directed and produced documentary film masterpiece. Definite buy!
truly great film.
I watched this film shortly after it's release and have watched it many times since then. It is amazing to hear so many of the critical events of the last half of the 20th century described not just by one witnessing them but by one who was actually a key player in these events. His descriptions of the cuban missle crisis, the build up leading to greater involvement in Viet Nam, the resurgence of Ford Motors, and even his involvement in the fire bombing of many cities in Japan during WW II are both riveting and at times terrifying. In addition, the background footage was well done and very appropriate. The musical score was pleasant without being overpowering. This film is a "must see" for anyone having an interest in recent history or current events.
This movie is significant!
This movie is powerful not only because of the rich historical insights but also human dimensions and behavior. A must see!
