Plot Summary

In the futuristic world of Olympia, a city on the brink of destruction, a team of scientists discovered a way to instantly reconfigure human DNA so that all disease would come to an end. However, this blessing becomes a curse and the city is overtaken by gangsters and DNA Hackers. Michelle (Bai Ling), a seductive assassin whose mission is to take out these so-called DNA Hackers is determined to use the new technology for good instead of evil. When her brother Jackie (Parry Shen) steals a genetic device from their neighbor Christian (Alec Newman), a vigilante scientist, he gets dragged into the immoral cyber-underworld. Banded together, Michelle must fight not just for her own skin and blood, but also for the survival of mankind.

Customer Reviews

Little to recommend here

I'm pretty forgiving of low-budget sf/f films, and I usually set pretty low expectations, but this dark fantasy film sadly failed to clear the bar.

Pros:
1) Bai Ling and her costumes are pretty hot.
2) The sets are cheap, but admirably done.

Cons:
1) The plot is a tattered mess.
2) The characterization is sophomoric, to be charitable.
3) There is no story.
4) The dialogue is skincrawlingly bad.
5) The creature effects are never better than what you see in the trailer.
6) The background mattes for the green screens are jarring.

I'm not sure the pros here outweigh the cons.

The beautifully dark underbelly of genome research...

The Gene Generation is an extended Combichrist video and Gigeresque eye-candy rolled into one. If you're looking for an action movie that does not require you to think, this is not the movie for you. If you'd like to ponder what the consequences of continued genetic research could lead to, buy this movie, don't rent it. If coding human DNA sequences like HTML, CSS, PHP, or C++ sounds like an interesting concept to you, plug in, download, and get ready for codemonkey heaven (or hell). Warning: some of the effects are more FPS game than movie quality, but the other aspects of this movie make up for it.

Not Recommended

Truly awful. Succeeds at making both gore and sex boring. Thank heavens I could access Wikipedia & Twine as this headbumper played; they provided some entertainment value for the evening.
