Fresh: The swirl of visual poetry, political intrigue and personal zeal that Polanski creates gets under your skin and brings an icy hand up your back. This is moviemaking.
Fresh: So elegant, so deliciously scary, so masterfully controlled that you feel tingles of bliss even as your skin crawls.
Fresh: Polanski is in total command of his medium, something that hasn't been a sure thing since the 1970s, The Pianist notwithstanding.
Rotten: The result is a political thriller refreshingly long on grown-up dialogue yet lamentably shy on, well, thrills. This chatty thing does go on.
Customer Reviews
A truly intelligent thriller.
What is so amazing about this film is that it builds incredible suspence without the use of action or visual effects. Instead the suspence is built upon an incredible storyline and stellar performances by the perfectly selected cast headed by Ewan McGregor. While there was not much character development for Ewan's role, he carried out his performance top-notch. Pierce Brosnan's role as Adam Lang didn't have as much screen time as I thought he would, but still managed to carry out a brilliant and satisfying performance. The screenplay was a brilliant piece of work. Instead of switching from scene to scene every few minutes, it gave us time to be really ingaged in the story and characters. An truly intellectual and wonderfully directed film that will stand out from other thrillers in the years to come. "The Ghost Writer" gets a well earned two thumbs up.
Why is this censored?!
The movie is quite good, but why in the world is it censored?! At first I thought I was imagining it, but in some instances, it is blatanly obvious that is has been censored. Freaking darn and all the words that no one says out of TV!
Great Thriller from a director who knows how to make one.
Whether you support Roman Polanski or not, you have to acknowledge that the man knows how to direct classic, old-school thrillers. This film is a well made, well paced thriller with a great performance by Kim Cattrell. Through out the film there is this atmosphere of deep dread that is just masterfully executed. This film is well worth seeing, certainly in this year of some not-so-great movies. The direction, acting, and pacing are all fantastically executed and well worth the two hours watch.
