Plot Summary

When an unannounced, uninvited and unwelcome family of fun-loving misfits converge upon a lakeside resort to join their relatives for a summer of relaxation, the result is anything but restful in this raucous comedy starring Dan Aykroyd and John Candy. It's a vacationer's worst nightmare, as wheeler-dealer Aykroyd, his sexually repressed wife and eerie twin daughters "join" the easygoing Candy and his straight-laced clan for a season of "fun" in the sun. Unfortunately, the only thing these two in-laws have in common is their intense dislike for each other. Soon, it's brother-in-law against brother-in-law in an uproarious and hilarious fight to the finish to see which one really knows how to enjoy The Great Outdoors.

great movie

i love this movie great scene and its where i go camping so rent it or buy it and see for yourself that is a good movie

John Candy...the best

John Candys legacy lives on with several hilarious movies, including this classic written by John Hughes. If youve ever been on a family vacation you can relate to the Great Outdoors. Watch out for hairless bears!!

Classic Candy/Akroyd 5-Star Humor

When the most critical of 35 reviews still gives this movie 4 stars, you know it's good.

This is John Candy and Dan Akroyd in their primes, and playing as well off of each other as any two comedians you could name. The story is one everyone can relate to regardless of setting, and the humor (both physical and non) is just as funny as you would expect from masters such as these two.

Rent it if you must, but I'd recommend buying it instead - you won't regret it.
