Plot Summary

Sergeant Gerry Boyle is an eccentric small-town cop with a confrontational and crass personality and a subversive sense of humor. A longtime policeman in County Galway, Boyle is a maverick with his own moral code. He has seen enough of the world to know there isn’t much to it and has had plenty of time to think about it. When a fellow police officer disappears and Boyle’s small town becomes key to a large drug trafficking investigation, he is forced to at least feign interest when dealing with the humorless FBI agent Wendell Everett assigned to the case. Left to run his territory to his liking for many years, he is not at all impressed when the FBI comes to town.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Crisp, acid-tongued and sharply acted, it's the sort of exercise in tangy Celtic cynicism that's become one of the Emerald Isle's most reliable imports. – Amy Biancolli, Houston Chronicle, Aug 19, 2011

Fresh: McDonagh's script is agile, darting between the ridiculous, the sage and the surprisingly sentimental. His love of language and the absurd has hints of the wisecracking Quentin Tarantino. But the story is decidedly more rooted in Ireland's loamy turf. – Lisa Kennedy, Denver Post, Aug 19, 2011

Fresh: A laugh-out-loud comedy as hard as "The French Connection," a modern spaghetti Western on the windswept wastes of Ireland. – Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel, Aug 22, 2011

Fresh: There are few things finer in cinema than Brendan Gleeson's fat, happy face. – Tom Long, Detroit News, Aug 19, 2011

Customer Reviews

A worthy investment of time and money

I'll have to concur with the rest. The reviews are spot on, so lay your money down and watch this piece. You will certainly not be disappointed. This piece was by far more grand than the typical Hollywood junk.

Well written, fast paced, memorable characters

Thick accents that'll test some but a refreshing film, dark, dark comedy.

well crafted

There is obviously great rapport between Cheadle and Gleeson and they both put in a superb performance. The western music in the background was a wonderfully tongue-in-cheek. Enjoyed it very much.
