Plot Summary
A favorite at this year’s Cannes, Toronto and Fantastic Fest film festivals, THE HOUSEMAID is a stylish, sexy thriller about an innocent young woman caught in the twisted web of a rich family's games. Eun-yi (Cannes Best Actress winner Jeon Do-youn of SECRET SUNSHINE) is hired as a nanny in an lavish mansion by businessman Hoon (Lee Jung-jae) and his very pregnant wife, Hae-ra (Seo Woo). When Eun-yi is seduced by the father of the house, she becomes the unwitting victim in a series of traps laid by the women of the house—Hae-ra, her villainous mother (Park Ji-young), and their seemingly loyal but increasingly bitter housekeeper (Yun Yeo-jong). Intensely erotic and fiendishly entertaining, THE HOUSEMAID builds to an unforgettable climax as Eun-yi must outwit them and escape their schemes to protect her sanity—and her life—from the vicious family.

Fresh: Mr. Im's voluptuous visual palette combined with the dexterity of his cast is enough to hold your interest and, at times, to make you hold your breath.
Fresh: There's something nicely kinky in this lusciously photographed erotic Korean thriller by Im Sang-soo - at least for those who don't compare it to the far kinkier, out-there 1960 original by Kim Ki-young.
Rotten: This high-end softcore thriller is juicily watchable from start to over-the-top finish, but its gleeful skewering of the upper classes comes off as curiously passe, a luxe exercise in one-note nastiness.
Fresh: Even with the piece wobbling between dark psychology and campy soap, the cast is compelling as it navigates the uncertainty.

Insanely stupid
Depressing in the extreme. This isn't a sexy thriller. Its a sick waste of time. Its disgusting how pseudo-intellectual critical drivel can drive such a non-entity of a film to people's screens.
The Housemaid
Despite being subtitled--which was not distracting at all--this movie was intriguing. Yes, it is sad and depressing--be prepared! But, what the movie does is give you a view of innocence stolen. My pity for the character was at first minimal because I felt her decisions lacked any intelliegence. However, if you step back and consider the plausibility--there are people that cannot see evil coming their way. Certainly, very few (if any) people go down this path--but this movie hits the mark in making you look at the sadness of emotional weakness. Janet
Not worth the trouble of watching
Cinematography is nice in this movie, but the complements stop here. Characters are unnatural and the plot is just a disaster. And, if you're drawn to the promise of erotica, then prepare to see something disfunctional in the deepest sense. At least sleazy porn will get the job done...
