Plot Summary

The first of several films based on Tom Clancy's "Jack Ryan" technothrillers, Hunt for Red October stars Alec Baldwin as eccentric CIA analyst Ryan and Sean Connery as Soviet submarine commander Marko Ramius. Ramius sets the plot in motion when he murders his political adviser, burns his orders, and steers his sub Red October towards American waters, hoping to defect. The CIA, aware that the Red October was about to embark on an evasive mission to demonstrate its ability to avoid detection and fire its nuclear missiles upon U.S. installations, believes that Ramius is insane, and that he plans to start World War III. To cover their own behinds, the Russians back up the CIA's suspicion. Only Jack Ryan believes that Ramius' mission is not as apocalyptic as it seems — and it is Ryan who is assigned to infiltrate the Red October to prove his theory. The sort of film that in an earlier era would have been called a "thinking man's thriller," The Hunt for Red October ushered in a new series of Hollywood-produced post-Cold War adventure films, including 1995's Crimson Tide.

One of Connery's Greats Besides Bond

I grew up with this movie and my dad and I love it. I was born in the latter portion of the Cold War, right round the time this movie took place and I can vaugly remember my parents' base being on edge because they were stationed in Germany. This movie and book gave us a good view from people who don't like the ways of Communism and would do anything to be free from it. This is a must-have for anyone who loves to read Tom Clancy books and suspense.

This Movie Rocks!

This is without question the best Clancy movie that has been made so far. After reading the book millions of times, the movie leaves out little of the important stuff, as opposed to "The Sum of All fears" in which the only thing in common is blowing up a football stadium and the same name :) This movie ROCKS

Great suspense thriller based on Tom Clancy

This is quite good. Unlike many movies (including “Patriot games”), you don’t feel disappointed if you already read the book. Never take as a substitute for the Tom Clancy novel (which is excellent), but don’t overlook this movie. What I found was the movie dropped or simplified only the scenes and characters it could afford to, preserving the overall suspense, technical accuracy, and captivating nature of the novel. Great actors too. The movie is easy to follow and helps your mental picture; the book is rich with storyline and information. See the movie, and then read the book.
