Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Jackson seems more at home in the afterlife than in this one, rendering this off-kilter project creepy and pretentious. – Tom Charity, CNN.com, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: The Lovely Bones is difficult viewing, a meticulously crafted experiment that, it turns out, wasn't worth it. – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: The miscalculation on almost every level is perversely thorough. It's as if the filmmaker, faced with an endless series of daunting creative choices, proudly took the wrong road each and every time. – Ty Burr, Boston Globe, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Tone is the first thing sacrificed in this shapeless, overlong, mawkishly muddled pop-up illustration of a movie. – Ann Hornaday, Washington Post, Jun 24, 2010

At Best You Might Feel a Whisper...

The Lovely Bones is the most beautiful film I've seen in many years (by now, I've seen it 5 times in theatres). There's something about the little moments in this film that moves me every time I watch it - I find myself anticipating "what comes next" scene by scene. There is heartbreaking beauty found here - the cinematography hauntingly captures the essence of Susie's story (Susie running along the beach in the in-between, the birds flying over the river as Susie lets go of life on Earth) and Brian Eno's poignant music stirs heartstrings somewhere deep inside the human soul. Susie Salmon, that iconic yet deeply affecting 14 year old girl, is the spirit that keeps this story alive. Stanley Tucci once said "you will be carried through this film by her (referring to Saoirse Ronan, who plays Susie)." And I was. The Lovely Bones will take your breath away...

Great

I loved this book and was so happy to see it come to the big screen I missed in theaters and was so happy to see it on itunes this morning. This is really a great movie and book.

I never read the book

Don't read the book, the book is awful, the movie is wonderful.
Just kidding!. Don't you just hate it when people think you need to hear about them reading a book.
"Look at me, I read a book, don't you think I'm smart?"
Books and movies are different animals.
