Rotten: [An] oversimplified, overheated mediocre melodrama.
Rotten: A genteel soap opera in which the sex and intrigue are so muted, so tasteful, that they practically blow off the screen in a scattering of dust.
Fresh: However embarrassed you might feel in the morning, this in an enjoyable movie with an entertaining angle on a hard-to-resist period of history.
Fresh: An entertainingly sudsy trip through early 16th century English history.

The Anne Boleyn Movie: Not The Other Boleyn Girl
As a huge fan of the book I was really excited about the movie. However, everything that made the book great was missing in the movie. Mary, Anne's sister is supposed to be the main character. In the movie it is all about Anne. Further more the deveolpment of the characters is all wrong. The mother was not supposed to be a nice nor caring mother as she was in the movie. Overlooking all this, there are serious plot holes such as the death of William Carey and the birth of Catherine Carey. If you were a fan of the book or of Tudor England then skip this movie. You will be disapointed. There is NO corrilation between the book and the movie.
This is the MOVIE, not the book!
I read the book by Phillippa Gregory, and absolutely LOVED it! Though the movie is a lot different than the book, it's supposed to be based on the book, not be an exact copy. You are supposed to rate the movie, not your opinion on it compared with the book. I personally like the book better, but I am rating the movie itself, which is AMAZING! (in my opinion, anyway) This is a great movie, and I will never get tired of the story of the rise and fall of the Boleyn girls.
Beware.
Lovers the book will not love this movie. The other Boleyn girl is Mary, not Anne, a fact this movie completely ignored. Beside straying drastically far from the deliciously naughty novel, the movie also defied history; messing up timelines, changing characters, and excluding very key points and locations. The casting was strange to me- why is the voluptous Scarlett playing the mild Mary? Why is plain Natalie playing lusty Anne? And- most importantly- why does Eric Bana not have red hair?!
