Plot Summary
People are drawn to the game of soccer for a myriad of reasons—fame, as a method of protest, or as an escape. Soccer transcends borders, both real and imagined, and offers tremendous insight into the conflicts and opportunities that face us in today's global community. In this feature documentary from acclaimed director Michael Apted, six interweaving but contrasting stories provide a dramatic and moving examination of the game’s social effect around the world. Set in South Africa, Iran, Argentina, the United States, England, Pakistan, and Senegal, and played out against the backdrop of the 2006 World Cup Finals in Germany, the stories expose the political and social significance of the game of soccer and its power and influence around the world.
