Plot Summary

Dreamworks Pictures has taken the biblical story of Exodus, put it into cartoon form, and released it on the big screen as an epic animated feature. The Prince of Egypt tells the story of Moses releasing the Jews from Egyptian slavery under the hand of the evil pharaoh Rameses. Think of The Ten Commandments with songs and an all-star cast doing the voices. In the Charlton Heston role of Moses is Val Kilmer. Moses' brother Rameses, previously played by Yul Brynner, is now voiced by Ralph Fiennes. The story revolves around these two close brothers, Moses and Rameses. While Rameses is groomed to take over the land, his beloved brother Moses is a carefree prankster, until he learns the true secret of his past. His secret, of course, is that he is really a Jew and as a child was floated down the river to escape mass genocide. The pharaoh Seti (Patrick Stewart) raised Moses as his son. Upon learning the truth of his past from a burning bush, Moses returns to Egypt with God on his side and demands that the pharaoh (now his brother Rameses) must "Let my people go." With songs written by Oscar-winner Stephen Schwartz and sung by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, The Prince of Egypt covers all the classic story points of the story of Moses, including the ten plagues and the parting of the Red Sea.

Fresh: The 400-member-strong Prince of Egypt team (led by directors Brenda Chapman, Steve Hickner and Simon Wells and ramrodded by executive producer Jeffrey Katzenberg) have created a succession of visual wonders. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Mar 19, 2008

Rotten: I wish DreamWorks had been more truly daring instead of merely competitive and worked a little longer at evolving a drawing style that departed more radically from the Disney house style than this film does. – Jay Carr, Boston Globe, Jun 24, 2010

Fantastic Classic!

"The Prince of Egypt" isn't just my personal favorite Dreamworks film, it's one of my favorite animated films of all time.

The film is based off the Biblical story found in the book of Exodus. It follows the life of Moses, from him being taken into royalty as a baby, to him discovering the Burning Bush, to the Ten Plagues, to him freeing his fellow Israelites from Egypt, to parting the Red Seas, and doing all this with only a staff, and the power of God. The writing that accompanys this story is beyond fantastic in many scenes, and the animation really captures the emotion on the faces of the characters.

Speaking of the animation, WOW! Even today, this is some of the most detailed, smooth pieces of animation I've ever seen in my life, most notably during the Ten Plagues montage, and especially during the parting of the Red Sea. The blend between traditional animation and 3-D animation is a technical feat that really sticks with the viewer.

The songs written by Steven Schwartz blend in perfectly with the drama, where compared with most animated musicals today, is a magnificent accomplishment. The score provided by Hans Zimmer is one of the best scores I've ever listened to, not just for an animated film, but for films in general.

This is definately one of those films where you don't need kids to love it. It's tons of fun, yet has a very mature tone to it, and it really does hold a place in your heart both as a technical marvel and as a smartly written film. A perfect film for the whole family. Two Thumbs Up!

"Let My People Go!" - Moses

Unbelievable! I can't believe iTunes literally has it. I got that movie for Christmas last year. I loved it and I still love it today. Now I can add it to my library and watch it on my laptop anytime. Its going to be great joining the rest of my other movies in my library. I can hardly wait until my library with movies is complete! My brother loves it too. I remember seeing it last winter and listening to the songs when I was 13. I'm 14 and a half and I'll be 15 in November this fall. I still love this movie. I also remember it being released when I was a toddler and when my brother was born. I was born in 1996 so I was 2 when this one came out. Thrilled iTunes has it. Great movie!

Great movie

I really love this movie. This is a good one even if you don't have kids.
