Plot Summary

All work and no play makes Academy Award-winner Jack Nicholson ("As Good As It Gets," "Batman"), the caretaker of an isolated resort, go way off the deep end, terrorizing his young son and wife Shelley Duvall ("Roxanne"). Master filmmaker Stanley Kubrick's ("Full Metal Jacket," "2001: A Space Odyssey") visually haunting chiller, based on the bestseller by master-of-suspense Stephen King ("The Stand," "Carrie," "The Shawshank Redemption"), is an undeniable contemporary classic. Newsweek Magazine calls this "the first epic horror film," full of indelible images, and a signature role for Nicholson whose character was recently selected by AFI for its' 50 Greatest Villains.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Kubrick isn't out for screams, but he manages to make his movie thoroughly unnerving by keeping the horror so close to home. – Janet Maslin, New York Times, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Kubrick has made a movie that will have to be reckoned with on the highest level. – Richard Schickel, TIME Magazine, Oct 21, 2010

Fresh: The movie is not about ghosts but about madness and the energies it sets loose in an isolated situation primed to magnify them. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: As a ghost story and adaptation of the Stephen King novel, it's largely a failure. On the other hand, as an example of directorial bravura and as a study of madness and the unreliable narrator, it's a brilliant success. – James Berardinelli, ReelViews, Oct 21, 2010

The Shining

A true work of horror film art, The Shining is a true classic in movie history. Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) takes his wife (Shelley Duvall), and his telepathic son Danny (Danny Llody) to an isolated hotel where he has been hired as the winter caretaker. But as the winter progresses, Torrance begins to slip into madness as ghosts begin to appear before him. Driven to insanity, Torrance attempts to "take care of" his wife in son in this horrifying tale of madness and murder. Directed by Stanley Kubrick.

Great!

this movie really is great. i'd say its probably the scariest movie i've ever seen. the comercial alone is pretty freaky. being all alone in a huge hotel, with someone who is slowly going crazy is an interesting situation.
